FINALLY! After some hard work i have finally finnished my Tribes ascend review :D Here it is:
Story: Ok readers im going to be blunt about this one, no there aren’t really a story in Tribes ascend because this is a multiplayer only game but basically its: Two tribes are angry at each other so they have started a war against each other! Of course if you really are curious you can read up about the lore in the official website but trust me readers this isn’t a game where you will care for the Lore at all.
Gameplay: This is where Tribes Ascend really shines out of the crowd but lets go through basics: Tribes is a multiplayer first person shooter where you have matches that can be 16 vs 16 on GIANT maps. You have you’re typicall modes like Capture the flag (CTF), team death match, hold over (basically a dominion mode where you take checkpoints and hold them from other teams and so on).
Because all the modes are similar to any multiplayer shooter out there i will only go through what makes this game unique out of the crowd: In this game you can do two things that makes it stand out, 1. You can “ski” by holding down the space button, when you ski you will be able to go up to 300 mph if you are a skilled player, which makes CTF really fun because of the high speed you can go in and take the enemy flag right under their noses and get back to you’re base in seconds. 2. Every class in this game has a jetpack that will help you up the high hills in the maps and just generally let you fly.
One may think that these are small additions to the FPS genre but really only these two features change how they whole game is played and makes it MUCH more fast paced.
Now another thing that this game has is that its much more skilled based when it comes to shooting, if you look at games like Call of duty where a player only needs to have quicker reflexes to win a gun fight. But in Tribes every class has a explosive weapon that shoots projectiles that arent that fast, which means that if you really want to hit a opponent then you need to learn to time you’re shoots to where the enemy is flying or when he is going to land. The game rewards you if you become a skilled shooter because every time you DIRECTLY hit a opponent who is in the air or ground you’re weapon does double the damage from what it usually does and you can get some sweet points in the matches from it.
Now another feature that may not be too strange for shooters but is awesome in this game is the different classes you can choose from, in this game there are three different weight classes: Light, Medium, Heavy. Every weight class has three different classes that have different jobs.
Light class has first the pathfinder which is the number one class for capturing flags because its the only class that can get speed up to 400 mph, second the infiltrator who can become invincible for limited time and goes into opponents base to destroy their defenses, third the Sentinel which is this games only Sniper class and can be very effective against incoming pathfinders (if you are skilled that is).
Medium class has first the Soldier which is one of the beginner classes in the game and is a all around class for anything, second (and one of my personal favorites) the Technician, a techs job is to make sure that everything in you’re base is working and put out turrets at smart places to defend a point or the flag and take out infiltrators that are trying to destroy the base. Then thirdly there is the Raider which you can hear by the name is supposed to go into a enemy base and destroy EVERYTHING on sight, raider is also the class that can give out the most damage the fastest in the game.
And lastly the Heavy classes: First there is the Juggernaut which has the highest firepower in this game and can one hit light or medium classes if you are enough skill shooter that is, the juggernaut job is to either go to a close enough distance to the enemy base and use the mortar to destroy enemys turrets and defenses or go into a opponents base and use the all over powerful mortar and creat chaos in there. Second there is the doombringer which is the best defender in a team, the doombringer is equipped with a minigun which is awesome for chasing down pathfinders, also the doombringer can deploy forcefields around the teams flag that instantly kills pathfinders if they chrash into it in high speed. Last but not least is the brute, brute has the strongest close range weapons out of all the classes and is the number one class for killing other players with because of the high damage at close range.
And every class has a TON of different weapons and uppgrades that you can purchase with XP you gain from every match.
Also in every match you earn credits for kills or different objectives you complete during the match, with these credits you can either: Uppgrade base defenses, buy a vehicle or use a air strike or call in a inventory station wherever you want.
Graphics: The graphics in this game are BEAUTIFUL! Every class are highly detailed and different from each other and the environments are really well done and have alot of pretty scenery to look at.
Music: The music is ok but it doesn’t really stand out or anything but the music does become intense when you have grabbed the flag and that is a nice touch in my opinion.
Replay value: ENDLESS seriously its a mutliplayer game only and you will almost always meet different players which will use different tactics and you have ALOT of things to unlock in the game and the game keeps getting new content so really there is a endless amount of replay vale in this game.
Difficulty: The game can be a little hard to get into because its a much more skilled based game but it has tutorials for everything and when you search for matches it will try to find people that are in you’re skill level so it isn’t as hard as some may think.
Other of interest: This game is a FREEEEEEEEEEEEEE to play game so yes you can download it today and it will not cost you a penny. Of course you may wonder *But CJ how do the developers get cash from this game?* and its quite easy, they release skins and new voices for the characters that cost gold that you have to purchase with real money BUT everything else in this game and i do mean EVERYTHING else can actually be bought with ingame XP or gold if you are impatient.
Final verdict: For me this game is one of the most awesome multiplayer shooters i have played for years and is alot of fun so for me it deserves 10/10. It just is fun very creativ with its maps and so on and best of all its for free ;)
